Florida Gator Football

It's still a big game
hortly after the turn of the century, the big hook came out and dragged Florida-Florida State right off the national stage.

The 10-year anniversary is time to remember '95
Friday was a special anniversary in the Gator Nation but very few people noticed. There was no celebration, no hugs or high-fives and there are no plans for a halftime ceremony at today's game.

Five questions with Florida linebacker Brandon Siler
Q: Which was the best SEC team that you faced this season? A: Alabama with (Tyrone) Prothro. Without Prothro I don't think they're the team they were. They were well rounded, but Prothro added another dimension.

FSU tackle came by his nickname 'Lucky' honestly
Ever since he was 6, Florida State fifth-year senior offensive lineman Ron Lunford has been known as "Lucky."

Smaller-scale things are on the line
GAINESVILLE -- Today's Iowa State-Iowa game ... oops. Today's N.C. State-North Carolina game ... oops. Today's Colorado State-Colorado game ... goofed again. Today's Florida State-Florida game ... that's it.

Looking For Its Mojo
Someone who wanted to get laughed out of the state nine years ago could have accomplished his goal simply by asking the question that made the rounds this week in Gainesville and Tallahassee.

It's been four years since their end-of-the-season meeting had national championship implications and interest for college football outside of Florida.

Florida rush offense vs. FSU rush defense The Gators haven't run as well as the coaching staff would have liked, but they gradually have gotten better as the season has progressed. The offensive line has remained relatively healthy, and you can expect to see a lot of DeShawn Wynn and Markus Manson up the middle and around the end today. FSU's defense has struggled of late, and what was supposed to be a magnificent group of linebackers merely has been good. If Florida can run effectively right up the gut, this will be a long day for the Seminoles. ADVANTAGE: Florida

In desperate need of a win
Although today's game between Florida and Florida State has no national significance, both teams need a victory to retain some pride.

With all the success former Florida coach Steve Spurrier enjoyed in Gainesville, there's one feat he accomplished just twice -- defeating UF's three key rivals in one season.

Fans know how to have a ball in FSU-UF rivalry
It's as clear as crystal, the intensity of the Florida-FSU football rivalry. Makes people do crazy things. Silly, irresponsible, uncharacteristic things.

Gators, Seminoles have plenty of goals in mind
You always knew where Steve Spurrier stood on a subject, and the former Florida coach never hid his dislike for playing Florida State the week before the SEC Championship Game - an event Spurrier held second to none.

FSU, UF QBs have struggled to flourish
Drew Weatherford was moping around his apartment two weeks ago, the night of Florida State's second consecutive loss, when tailback Lorenzo Booker called his distraught quarterback.

FLORIDA 1. Protect the passer: After giving up 19 in 12 games last season, the 31 sacks UF's offensive line has allowed are among the darkest blotches on the team's ledger this season. The big Gators up front need to give Chris Leak time against the Seminoles, who lead the ACC in sacks with 33. Four seniors will start along the UF offensive line, and they'll need to play their best game of 2005. But Leak will need to help himself, too, by throwing the ball on time. TE Tate Casey and FB Billy Latsko will be key in the protection scheme.

Home-crew advantage
He fumbled. No, he didn't. Yes, he did. Two years ago, Florida State tailback Leon Washington became a focus of controversy in the Florida-Florida State game. But the real firestorm was back home in Jacksonville, when he returned to see family and friends.

FSU must deal with noise at Swamp
The wrath and fury of Florida fans won't be a new experience for Drew Weatherford. He sat among them the last time Florida State traveled to The Swamp in 2003.

Disappointed rivals still fired up
Who cares? Those two words were being muttered on the campuses of Florida State and Florida, and across the college landscape, more than either football team would care to admit leading into today's 3:30 p.m. meeting between the two rivals.

Florida Gator Basketball

'Nole knockdown
Florida point guard Taurean Green couldn't recall a game when he shot more free throws. Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton couldn't recall a game when three different players fouled out.

Early FSU lead only spurred UF to action
The team that doesn't mind winning ugly needed a bag over its head. Florida was stinking up the joint and Florida State couldn't miss. It was this simple - every wart the Gators showed in New York was being exposed.

Better late than never
Andrew Wilson's sophomore season was seven minutes old when it came to an abrupt end with a right knee injury in the opener at Florida.

Fouls fuel Florida comeback
Florida coach Billy Donovan said he wanted to find out what his team would do when it couldn't shoot the ball well.

Gators Survive Scare
Billy Donovan wondered this past week what might happen if his University of Florida basketball team's shots didn't fall. Down 17 points after nine minutes Friday against Florida State, Donovan got his answer.

Teamwork the theme for these Gators
There is no I in team. There were, however, 21 turnovers, 23 fouls, a 21-4 deficit and a leading scorer who never made a basket.

Gators thwart upset bid
The first whistle Friday night came a minute into the game; the last one coincided with the final buzzer.

Free throws rally UF past FSU 74-66
Florida Gators coach Billy Donovan knew his young team was going to have some moments like this.

Free throws rally UF past FSU 74-66
Florida Gators coach Billy Donovan knew his young team was going to have some moments like this. A Top-25 ranking and back-to-back wins against national powers Wake Forest and Syracuse a week ago wasn't going to change that

No. 14 Gators overcome 21-4 deficit, defeat 'Noles
Taurean Green led the Florida Gators in scoring Friday night -- and didn't hit a field goal.

Mistakes, fouls doom 'Noles
Too many mistakes prevented Florida State from notching its first win over a ranked team on the road in nearly four years.

Seminoles didn't have staying power
Leonard Hamilton would have been happy if the second half had provided a fresh start for his Florida State basketball team.

Gators battle back for win
Florida fans who missed the first nine minutes of the Gators' 74-66 win against Florida State on Friday might have thought someone was playing a trick. Gators rally past Noles
Taurean Green scored 15 points, and Florida overcame an early 17-point deficit to defeat Florida State.
