LSU's Sean Barker scored from third when Brian Rose's errant throw to first base bounced off runner David Raymer on a after a called third strike. Barker led off the 10th inning with a bunt single to third base. He advanced to second on Matt Heath's sacrifice bunt then went to third on a ground out.
LSU's Jake Thompkins (5-0) recorded the final three outs in the bottom of the 10th to secure the win. Thompkins pitched 3.0 innings, walked four and allowed one hit in earning the win. UF's Jamie Goldfarb (2-3) took the loss as he put Barker on base.
Florida battled back two times to remain in the game and had opportunities in the eighth and ninth innings to win but stranded a combined four runners (3-8th, 1-9th). The Gators forced extra innings and tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the ninth on Pat Osborn's sacrifice fly with no outs and the bases loaded. With one out and runners at first and third bases, LSU reliever Jake Thompkins got out the inning as he got Ryan Shealy to ground into a double play. With the score tied at 3-3 in the eighth inning, Florida had an opportunity to break the game open as it loaded the bases with one out but LSU reliever Jake Tompkins got Aaron Davidson to ground out to a fielders choice then struck out Brian Rose to close the inning.
"We put ourselves in some favorable situations but we didn't complete any of those opportunities," Florida head coach Pat McMahon said. "We battled really hard tonight. It was a great game played by two good teams."
LSU's Aaron Hill gave the Tigers a 4-3 lead with a ninth inning RBI single. With runners at second and third base, Hill hit the first pitch off reliever Jamie Goldfarb into left field to drive home pinch runner Rocky Scelfo from third base. Chris Phillips reached base on a single and was replaced by Scelfo. Jon Zeringue followed with a single and both runners moved to second and third base respectively on J.C. Holt's fly ball to left field.
LSU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Heath led off with a single up the middle and scored on Clay Harris' RBI double. Harris scored from third when Chris Phillips' hit was misplayed by UF pitcher Jimmy Ramshaw. The Gators cut the margin to 2-1 in the third when Ben Harrison walked and advanced to third on Mark Kiger's single to right field. Harrison scored on Aaron Sobieraj's sacrifice fly ball to left field. But LSU went up 3-1 in the fourth as Matt Heath reached base on an error and scored on David Raymer's RBI double.
Down 3-1, the Gators battled back to tie the game at 3-3 with two runs in the fifth inning. Brian Rose led off the inning with a single to center field and advanced to second on Ben Harrison's sacrifice bunt. A double down the left field line by Mark Kiger scored Rose from second. After Kiger advanced to third on Aaron Sobieraj's ground ball, Kiger scored when LSU catcher Chris Phillips overthrew third base while attempting to pick him off.
Florida starter Jimmy Ramshaw pitched 5.0 innings, allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) and walked two. LSU starter Lane Mestepey threw the first 7.0 innings allowing eight hits, three runs.
*Aaron Sobieraj tied Florida's season sacrifice bunts record with his 10th sacrifice in the ninth inning. The sac bunt was Sobieraj's 23rd of his career, also a school record.
*Florida made three double plays this evening. That total ties a team season high.
*Pat Osborn extended his hit streak to 18 games.
*Mark Kiger extended his hit streak to 11 games with a single in the third inning.
