Florida to Host NCAA Baseball Regional

Florida (43-17, 20-10 SEC) earned the No. 1 seed and will play MEAC champion and No. 4 seed Bethune-Cookman (38-20) at 7 p.m. Friday evening at McKethan Stadium. No. 2 seed Florida International (41-18) will play No. 3 seed Miami (30-26) in the NCAA Regional opener at 3 p.m. Friday.

Florida will enter NCAA Regional play after winning 19 of its last 25 games. Florida head coach Pat McMahon has 43 wins this season, his all-time winningest total as a head coach. The Gators finished the SEC Tournament 3-2 and came within one out of playing for the SEC Tournament championship.

"We're extremely excited about hosting," McMahon said. "It's wonderful news for the program, our players, the university and the fans. We have four outstanding ballclubs in a very tough regional. It will be a tough test for us in every way."

Florida will be hosting its first NCAA Regional since 1998. Florida has hosted five NCAA Regionals during its baseball history. Prior to the 1999 season when the new NCAA Super Regional format was introduced, the Gators have advanced to the College World Series in three of the five times that Florida has hosted a NCAA Regional including each of the last two times (1996 and 1998).

The Gainesville Regional winner will advance to play in an NCAA Super Regional against the Columbia, S.C. winner. The NCAA Super Regional round is a best two-of-three series which will be played June 7-9. The Super Regional winner advances to the College World Series. The four teams in the Columbia, S.C. regional include No. 1 seed No. 6 national seed South Carolina (48-14), No. 2 seed North Carolina (40-19), No. 3 seed James Madison (42-14) and No. 4 seed Virginia Commonwealth (38-25).
