The Football Signees and the Baseball Draft

The 2002 Professional Baseball Draft will take place on June 4th and 5th. Rumors have been running wild recently about whether or not two Gator football signees will bypass college for profesional baseball. Those two players are Gavin Dickey and Jemalle Cornelius. UFI talks with both of them and finds out where each of them stand on the draft.



Comments by Gavin Dickey on April 1, 2002: "Right now with baseball I'm just playing it by ear. It depends on the baseball draft in June.  But right now have no plans to play baseball. "

Dickey's Comments Days Before the Draft: "Right now no one [has given] me a specific [location about where] I will go in the draft.  Right now, I am not planning on quitting football.  I am scheduled to report to Gainesville on the 25th of June." 

Notes on Jemalle Cornelius from an Interview Done on April 15, 2002 :  He said how in the spring he was playing baseball.  He mentioned how at the time his team was 18-7 up to that point in the season and that he was currently batting .660.     

Cornelius' Comments Days Before the Draft:
"As of right now I would have to say no [about forgoing college], I doubt I would go in the top 10 rounds [of the draft]."
