Scouting Joe Cohen (DE)

A scouting report on running back/defensive end Joe Cohen. Cohen is a tremendous athlete from Melbounre (Fla.) Palm Bay High School. Cohen reminds me of another two-way phenom from a few years ago - Julius Peppers.

The first thing you notice about Joe Cohen on film is his combination of size and speed. He was 6-2.5 and 238 pounds at the Nike Camp in Miami. There, he ran a 4.47 forty and vertical jumped 32.7 inches. That kind of athleticism reminds me of a former high school running back/ defensive end named Julius Peppers, although Peppers stood 6-5 in high school. Cohen shows the same tools but he is faster and quicker than Peppers was at the same stage. Cohen has very good lateral quickness. To be honest with you, I saw a highlight film of Cohen and it was mainly offensive footage. He is tough between the tackles, breaks a lot of tackles, and is a very good blocker. He could play a big tailback at the next level but I sincerely believe he is destined to play defensive end. Cohen looks explosive, quick and has long arms. He is aggressive and physical. The bottom line is that he shows all the attributes you look for in a rush end and his upside looks tremendous.
