"I got an eye for the ball," said Burgess. "As a strong safety, I love making contact. I love hitting someone. In fact, I like to feel it myself."
Burgess may eventually outgrow the position. Right now, he stands 6-3 and weighs 220 pounds. Burgess knows he may end up playing linebacker.
"All the coaches say they want me as a strong safety. I know I need to keep my weight down and get my speed up (4.5 forty) to stay at safety. If that doesn't work, I guess I will be a linebacker. But I prefer from strong safety."
According to Burgess, he has a couple dozen scholarship offers including such schools as Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, Maryland, Penn State, Michigan State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. For now, he favors four schools, but nothing is set in stone.
"I am wide open but I think Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee and Florida are four schools that I will likely visit. I am not sure about the fifth one just yet.
"I am looking at the depth charts and who these schools are recruiting. I want to pick a place where I feel comfortable and I also want to play for a winner.
"There is a tremendous amount of pressure for me to stay in-state. I hear it everyday. But the bottom line is that I will do what is best for me."
Burgess camped at Ohio State and Michigan last month.
