On the day Emmitt Smith was named to the College Football Hall of Fame, the Florida Gators picked up a potential star running back of the future.

During his legendary career at Pensacola Escambia High School, Emmitt Smith always drew a crowd. And Dan Brooks, a Florida assistant coach at the time, always seemed smack in the middle of it.

Three's company
Three of the most recognizable figures in Florida college football history will now share another distinction. Former Florida State quarterback Charlie Ward, Florida tailback Emmitt Smith and Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden will be inducted together as members of the 2006 College Football of Fame.

Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden couldn't have predicted this because everyone knows the rules, and the rules say you can't honor a guy for a career he hasn't completed.

'Cocktail Party' on ice
A cocktail party by any other name is what? Perhaps the Florida-Georgia football game. Acting on the wishes of officials at Florida and Georgia, the Southeastern Conference has asked TV partners CBS, ESPN and Jefferson-Pilot to stop referring to the annual game as the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party," said Greg McGarity, UF's senior associate athletic director.
