Men's Golfer Horschel Qualifies For U.S Open

Gainesville, FL University of Florida freshman Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) shot a two-round total of 140 (73-67) at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier held at the Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa on Tuesday to lead three players at the venue who advanced to next weekend's national tournament. The U.S. Open will be held over June 15-18 at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

A first-team All-American, Horschel shared the individual medal at the NCAA West Regional in Tucson, Ariz., and also notched top-10 finishes at both the SEC and NCAA Championships. Under the direction of head coach Buddy Alexander, Florida finished its campaign as the 2006 NCAA runner-up.

Despite a second-round 67, senior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) fell two shots shy of a playoff at Old Memorial with a 143. Freshman Tody Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) did not qualify after shooting 78-72 (150) in Rockville, Md. Former Gator Camilo Villegas was among 21 qualifiers advancing to the Open from an event held in Columbus, Ohio, with a two-round total of 136 (67-69).
