RECRUITING: Van Dyke commits to Canes

DeMarcus Van Dyke has over a dozen scholarship offers and today, he announced his college intentions. "I'm a Cane," Van Dyke said. "It's over. I committed to Miami today. I called and told Coach Shannon and Coach Walton. I'm excited."

The Miami Pace standout picked the Canes over the Gators and a host of others at the end.

"Florida was nice but in the end, it was the NFL factor," he said. "Miami has it. Me and my grandfather were talking about which schools are putting guys into the league or whatever and most of the DBs at Miami end up going into the league. That's something I like."

Van Dyke, 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, still plans on taking a couple official visits later in the year but his decision is final.

"I'm a Cane," he said. "I made my decision. There ain't no changing my mind now."

The talented cornerback prospect is going into a situation at UM where they are a bit thin at corner but most of the guys there are young.

"They have three sophomores and a junior," he said. "There's gonna be competition everywhere you go. You can't run from it. I'll be ready to compete. I'm 6-1 with 4.3 speed and I can play."

Van Dyke, who said he committed early to focus on his senior season, plans on doing some recruiting now.

"We look good so far," he said. "I'm gonna try getting Deonte. I'm gonna call him today. It's me and Damian Berry (in the secondary). Now we need to get Doug Wiggins and Major Wright. It looks good right now."
