Reggie Nelson gets a majority of the publicity play of the safeties from the Sunshine State. But there are other top-notch prospects such as Brandon Owens and Willie Cooper. Cooper, 6-2 and 190 pounds, is a quarterback/ free safety from St. Augustine, Florida. Last year, he led his team to the state championship game and a 12-2 season. They lost the title game 36-6 to Rockledge. As a junior, Cooper was 40/64 for 650 yards and 3 scores. He made his mark on defense, where he recorded 133 solo tackles and 6 interceptions.
"Everyone is recruiting me as a free safety," said Cooper. "I think I have a good knowledge of the game. I always seem to find the ball. I play aggressively. I love to be the man and make the big play."
According to Cooper, he has scholarship offers from Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, South Florida, Central Florida, Rutgers, Iowa, Cncinnati and Southern Miss.
"I grew up a Florida State fan but with recruiting, I want to keep an open mind because I want to make the best decision for me. I would prefer to stay in Florida or play on the East Coast. Playing time is important but not that important because I know I will do what I have to do once I get to college.
"Right now, FSU has a slight edge over Florida, Georgia and Oklahoma."
