SEC MEDIA Days Recap

[MEDIA:39261]<BR>While Steve Spurrier was over in Japan getting his Redskins ready for the pre-season opener against the 49ers, his name was still the main topic of discussion at media days. Here are some of the in's and out's of this years SEC Media Days in Birmingham,Alabama.

In case you missed it from the SEC Media days..............

According to the coaches.players and media...

Steve Spurrier's presence will be missed but not his coaching ability.  Florida still has players, including Rex Grossman.  Florida's coach forced the conference ,and ultimately the nation, to become more pass happy on offense.

Lou Holtz thinks Georgia is the team to beat, the media thinks it is Tennessee.  Alabama is not eligible for the title but is aiming for best in the West.  This year in Tide country there is no preseason quarterback controversy, with Tyler Watts holding the job. Many feel Brodie Croyle may be the man by the time the Iron Bowl rolls around.

Speaking of the Iron Bowl, the word on the plains is Tommy must win that game and seven more (8-4) or Tuberville is gone.  When addressing the issue of being on the "hotseat" Tuberville says the Auburn program will always have a coach who is expected to win .

The rift between Casey Clausen and Vol offensive coordinator Randy Sanders has subsided.  Considering the way the Vol passing game developed last year, Clausen feels like he is the man and they are getting along fine  If the Vols don't find a receiver opposite Kelly Washington, and begin to run more than pass, the feud could re-surface.

With no Steve Spurrier, who presents the marquee win on a coaches resume?  Tennessee... not only winningest program over the last five years, but the Vols are perceived by others in the league to be getting away with more than there share of violations.

Did someone say violations?  Mississippi St. and it's problems with the NCAA does not stop with the football program. It reaches men's basketball and all the way to  women's basketball !!!.How about that for Title IX equality?

Georgia will be more organized on the sideline this year and one reason is Coach Mark Richt may see things differently. Coach Richt had lasik eye surgery in the off-season.

Vandy's Bobby Johnson is not as comfortable with his 1-AA opponent the second game of the season.  It is the Furman Paladins, his former job.  What does that tell Vandy football supporters?

Kentucky has decided that Jared Lorenzen does not have a weight problem.  Basically he is what he is... a thick, overweight, talented quarterback.

LSU is going to start the season with Matt Mauck as their QB, but the confidence is not there with the coaches.  Rumor is they are going to sign a JUCO kid who can be eligible this fall.

All the coaches seemed to be against the twelfth game this season.  Their reason?  Players should get some of the money for their time and it should not all go to the NCAA.  Real Reason... Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Florida State, Southern Cal, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech and Oregon on the road.  Miami, Clemson, Louisville and Syracuse at home.

Finally my SEC awards for Media Days 2002...  Best Dressed coach (Tommy Tuberville), Player (Casey Clausen), Most Articulate Coach (Dennis Franchione), Player (Ian Scott), Fastest talking coach (Ron Zook), least talking player (Dontarrious Thomas), Best Quote Award (Coach Lou Holtz), player (Eddie Moore), Media idiot award of the week - who ever voted Alabama as the SEC Champion!  They are not even eligible.
