Crowder Talks About Staying Home

Channing Crowder did not report to the University of Florida with members of the 2002 Gator recruiting class. He is now at home in Roswell, Georgia.

The Florida Gator freshmen reported for their first practice this past Wednesday and there was one big surprise. Channing Crowder was not in attendance. Crowder, from Roswell (Ga.) North Springs High School, is coming off knee surgery.

"Florida gave me the option to come and rehab and red-shirt," said Channing, "or stay home and rehab and come in in January. I think it is best that I stay home and not waste a year. Now, I can get my knee better here and report in January and play in spring without having to red-shirt."

Crowder, 6-3 and 240+ pounds, had ACL surgery 10 weeks ago. That was his third surgery. He also had it in the 8th grade and 10th grade.

"I am not quite ready yet. I will stay home, work out and rehab, get a job and get down to Gainesville as much as possible. Two weeks ago, I started running and I know I have a ways to go. I plan on going to the University of Florida in January and in the spring I will be ready to start cracking some heads. I am not going anywhere else. I plan on playing for the Gators in 2003. I will be ready."
