Monday Night Practice - Day One

One again the rain and weather had a major factor on Monday evenings' practice session.  Here are some news and notes:

  • Reid Fleming was working with the #1s at middle linebacker, not Matt Farrior.  He also made a real nice play knocking down an intended pass for tight end Aaron Walker in pass skel.
  • Team started with individual drills with the DLs working on getting off blocks, the linebackers working on form tackling and the DBs working on coverages.  The defense then worked on a bunch of different blitz packages.
  • Dallas Baker and Carlos Perez struggled with dropped passes.
  • Gavin Dickey, Kenneth Tookes and Taylor Jacobs all looked very good in pass skel drills.
  • DeShawn Carter got beat twice, once by Jemalle Cornelius on a long pass from Gavin Dickey and once by a Kenneth Tookes stiff arm.
  • Patrick Dosh hit Reggie Lewis for a nice touchdown pass.  Lewis ran a corner route.
  • Rex Grossman looked good although he missed Taylor Jacobs, who was covered well by Robert Cromartie, on a deep route.  Cromartie had a good practice and made some plays.
  • #18, walk-on punter Jason Hunter from Tampa Catholic, was working with the #1 punt team.
  • Keiwan Ratliff, Vernell Brown, Jemalle Cornelius and Reggie Lewis were all returning punts, as the Gators worked on punt coverage and returns.  On the punt team, they had 6 starters working with the #1 team including Guss Scott, Aaron Walker and Bam Hardman.
  • In the secondary, Tre Orr is backing up Ratliff, Marquis Westbrook is backing up Robert Cromartie, Lester Norwood is backing up Todd Johnson and Cory Bailey is backing up Guss Scott.
  • During team passing drills, Grossman was looking for and hooking up with Jacobs more than anyone.
  • Randy Hand and Chad Tidwell struggled during conditioning drills.
  • Ian Scott, Bobby McCray and Arpedge Rolle were leaders in the conditioning drills.
  • The freshmen RB continue to impress, especially Ciatrick Fason.
  • Ingle Martin worked out sparingly.  He injured his knee in an off the field mishap.
  • Nothing new to report in regards to Dallas Baker's eligibility status.
  • Zook said the team got better from practice one to practice two.
