Thursday Morning Practice Notes

Thursday's news and notes from the morning practice includes a shuffling along the offensive line, another freshmen stepping up and a guest speaker talks with the team.

Thursday Morning Practice - Two-a-days

  • Lance Butler has moved from right tackle to right guard to compete with Rod Dowdy for the backup roll to Jonathan Colon.  Both guys appear to be battling for the 6th and 7th spots on the O-line.

  • True freshman Randy Hand is far more advanced than the coaches initially thought.  He has shown the ability and capacity to learn the offense and the schemes very quickly.  Hand is playing tackle and should play this season.

  • Offensive linemen Bobby Williams and Jonathan Lively are struggling.

  • Florida has had seven practices now and David Jorgensen has not made up any ground on Mike DeGory.

  • Marcus Oquendo-Johnson got more reps with the first team than Bobby McCray.  Zook said not to read into this.  They will both play a ton this season and Zook is just trying to get them ready.

  • There will be as many as 14 starters for the defense.  This means that Clint Mitchell/ Darrell Lee are pretty even, McCray/Oquendo-Johnson are pretty even, and Matt Farrior/ Reid Fleming are pretty even.

  • Mitchell had to stay after practice for more conditioning as punishment for something he did wrong in practice.

  • Zook said that Ingle Martin clearly the #2 quarterback behind Rex Grossman.  Last night, Gavin Dickey struggled and Patrick Dosh looked better.  Today, Dickey had a better practice.  Remember, they are installing more and more of the offense so the freshmen are expected to struggle.

  • ESPN College Football Analyst Mike Gotfried spoke with the team after practice.  Zook coached with him for seven seasons.  Gotfried spoke with the team about dealing with the media in a positive way.  He also asked the team three questions and if anyone answered the questions correctly, he would give them an autographed Pete Rose baseball.  A player did.  But Zook will not give the baseball to the player until he graduates from school.  Zook would not identify the player.

  • Zook also praised the veterans for how they are practicing, knowing where to go and getting there quickly.

  • Tonight, the Gators will practice in full pads and will start hitting.

  • There will be a scrimmage Saturday at 4 pm.

  • Coming later today, audio clips from Coach Zook and Coach Wickline (OL Coach).
