Zook has begun game week preparations for the Ohio game today by announcing this week's captains. Offensive captains will be tight end Aaron Walker and left guard Shannon Snell. The defensive captain will be Byron "Bam" Hardmon, while Todd Johnson will serve as special teams captain. Walker is off to fast start through two games and is averaging 22.2 yards per reception, the second highest average on the team. Defensively, Hardmon has posted double-digit tackles in each of the first two games, including a 12-tackle effort against Miami. Hardmon also recorded the first touchdown of his career when he returned a Ken Dorsey pass 26 yards. With two interceptions this past weekend, Johnson upped his career total to nine, the highest total of any active player in the SEC.
The UF vs. Ohio game will be available on Pay-Per-View. The 6 p.m. kick-off will feature Larry Vettel, Steve Babik, and Nat Moore calling the action.
The Gators have had very good success against teams from the Mid-American conference. The Gators are 9-1 all-time against members of the Mid-American Conference (1-0 v. Akron; 1-0 v. Central Florida; 1-0 v. Kent State; 1-0 v. Marshall; 0-1 v. Miami (OH); 1-0 v. Ball State; 1-0 v. Central Michigan; 1-0 v. Western Michigan; 2-0 v. Northern Illinois), but have never faced Ohio. The Bobcats enter with an 0-2 mark, including a 31-0 loss to Northeastern this past weekend.
Zook says changes may be forthcoming on the first team offense, defense and special teams. Obviously there were some glaring weaknesses in the on the Gators team that got exploited when they played Miami. Those positions were the wide receivers behind Taylor Jacobs, right offensive tackle, middle linebacker, the punter, and the field goal kicker. Zook said that freshman Reggie Lewis will probably see more reps at wideout to try and help the Gators build some quality depth there and also that Freshman OT Randy Hand could move into the first team right tackle spot, replacing Mo Mitchell. Travis Harris will get a look at Middle Linebacker again this week, in hopes that maybe he can be the solution to the hole in the middle of the Gators defense. And finally, Zook said both the punter's job and the field goal kicker's job are up for grabs this week.
