Slight Home Town Advantage

Shelby (N.C.) Crest linebacker Duane Maddox is one of the top prospects from the Tar Heel State. At 6-1, 220-pounds, Maddox has offers from North Carolina State, Alabama, Clemson, East Carolina, North Carolina, Marshall and South Carolina. Could a UF offer be next?

Since the end of football season Duane Maddox has spent all his spare time in the weight room.

"I have been trying to get bigger, stronger and faster," Maddox said.

With a 4.58 40-time, Maddox knows that one of his strengths is his speed. During his senior season, one of the things that he would like to improve on is his pass coverage.

"My speed from sideline to sideline and my tackling ability are two of my strengths."

Over the summer months, Maddox will visit Florida and Alabama.

"I talk to Coach "Doc" Holiday a lot," Maddox said. "He was telling me that if I want to win that there is no better place in the nation than Florida. They have a great team right now."

Florida's depth chart is appealing as well.

"When you are trying to decide on a school to go to you need to look at depth charts, and I know that they have a bunch of younger guys at linebacker."

Maddox has not been to Gainesville yet but is looking forward to learning all he can about the Gators.

"I will know a whole lot more about them once I visit," he said. "Things that I am looking for is the coaching relationship and the atmosphere."

With seven offers currently, and Florida, Georgia Tech and Florida State on the way, Maddox knows he has a big decision ahead of him.

"Coach Holiday wants me to take my visit over the summer and then we will talk about an offer," Maddox said.

Last season he had 110 tackles, 91 solo, three pass break-ups, five sacks and one fumble recovery. Being from North Carolina, Maddox says that the hometown teams have a slight edge.

"I think it gives them a little bit of an edge being so close to home, I mean just a little bit."
