Peach State Safety likes Gators

With over 27 written offers, Darrell Simmons is the kind of safety that college coaches are looking for. He is currently keeping his options open, but does have his eye on a top six.

Darrell Simmons, from College Park (Ga.) Banneker High School is one of the top safety prospects from the Peach State. Simmons is 6-2 and 196-pounds with reported 4.5 speed.

"Right now I have 27 offers but am seriously looking at a top six of Alabama, Miami, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee," he said.

Simmons has not had a chance to check out any schools at this time but that is all about to change.

"My first trip is this week and I am heading to check out Ohio State," Simmons said. "I have not been there before, so I am excited to see what they have to offer. After that, it looks like I will check out Alabama."

Simmons was able to attend junior day at the University of Florida and is anxious to get back July 20 for Friday Night Lights.

"It was tremendous," he said. "Coach [Stan] Drayton is recruiting me for the safety position and it looks like I will be able to make it back for Friday Night Lights. Florida is used to winning right now and that is something that I would definitely want to be a part of. They have a very aggressive style of defense that has the players flying to the ball and that is how I like to play defense."

At 6-2 and close to 200-pounds Simmons is concentrating on getting bigger, stronger and faster and has the ideal frame to do it.

"I am working out twice a day everyday just trying to get after it and improve my overall game," Simmons said. "One of the strengths of my game is running down hill and making the tackle. When I get a chance to hit someone I will not miss."

Simmons ended his junior season with more than 85 tackles, including 10 for loss and four sacks.
