#16, 62 points allowed in a bowl game, Nebraska 1996 ----- At the end of the 1995 season the Gators were perfect and headed to the Fiesta Bowl to battle Nebraska for the National Championship. After one quarter, the Gators actually led by a 10-6 score. Unfortunately they kept on playing. Nebraska scored 29 unanswered points in the second quarter and the game was over by halftime. To fully appreciate how many points that really is, the second most Florida's allowed in a bowl game is 37.
#15, Zero offensive points, Miami 1987 ----- The Florida Gators have not been shutout since a 16-0 loss to Auburn in 1988, but they have been shut out many times over the years. But to me, this 31-4 loss was even worse. The Gators entered the year confident they would be a better team with senior quarterback Kerwin Bell leading the way. However, Florida's offense was as impotent as a 9-year-old in a coma against one of Miami's best teams. The only points the Gators managed were on two snaps out of the end zone by the ‘Canes' Willie Peguese. To me, that was worse than not scoring at all. It did, however let me get in a good line on the Gator Radio Network broadcast after the second safety when I said, "It's obvious the Gators game plan the rest of the way should be to get the ball in Willie Peguese's hands as often as possible." The powers that be were not amused.
#14, 70 total points, 1931 ----- Just three short years after the Gator Football team led the nation in scoring, Florida couldn't score against air. The Gators put 31 points on the board in an opening day win over N.C. State, but managed just 39 points in the next nine contests. The Gators were shut out four times and scored just two points in another game on their way to a 2-6-2 finish.
#13, Zero passing yards, Football (2X) ----- Against Furman in '47 and again Mississippi State in '58 the Florida Gators failed to gain a single yard of real estate through the air. Are you kidding me? Not one?! Well it's true and it simply cannot happen again. Amazingly enough, the Gators won the Furman game with ease, 34-7. However, you would think a pass or two could have changed the 14-7 loss to the Bulldogs.
In our next segment, we'll have a couple of dubious achievements in other sports as well.
