FNL: Gators Make it Tough for BYU Commit

Austin Holt is the No. 2-ranked tight end in the country. Holt, from South Jordan (Utah) Bingham High School is 6-6 and 228-pounds and runs in the 4.9 range. He has been a BYU commitment for sometime, but did his trip to Friday Night Lights change that?

Talk a little bit about your situation, you are currently committed to another school but were very excited to come to Friday Night Lights.

"Florida offered after I decided to commit to BYU. Florida was never one of my top choices because I did not think they were interested in me but when I found that out it changed things. I wanted to come out and meet the coaches. They are from Utah and I really liked the campus."

Did it meet your expectations?

"I really loved the atmosphere and the high intensity. Watching the highlight tape will be the thing that I will remember most about the recruiting process the rest of my life."

What did you think about the National Championship Trophies on display?

"Playing for a national title definitely factors into my decision, absolutely. Florida is a great program and they play in the best conference in America."

When the camp was over you and your dad had a chance to spend a lot of time with Offensive Coordinator Dan Mullen, how special was that for you?

"It was awesome. I really think that before you commit to a school you need to go to their camp and see if you like the coaching staff and how they do things. It was neat to sit down with the National Championship coaches and talk to them about recruiting and the situation with BYU and me. It was just an overall great time."

How much of a factor is the depth chart at your position? You had a chance to speak with current Florida tight end Aaron Hernandez.

"If Cornelius Ingram leaves early and that's what I think the staff expects to happen with the kind of touches he will get, Aaron will be the only tight end on the team. To have that opportunity coupled with the fact that they are the National Champs and play in the best conference in America it is hard to pass that up. The staff talked all about that to me."

What is next for you?

"The staff told me that they are going to keep recruiting me all the way through the season and they will call me every week with the text messaging going away in August. It was very special. The last thing that Coach Mullen told me as we were leaving was that it is a long way away from National Signing Day."

Holt excels with his route running ability and has incredible hands catching just about everything thrown his way. He has tremendous concentration over the middle and is not afraid to stretch out for the ball. Holt also is a tremendous blocker.
