Young Receivers Get Praise

Florida receivers coach Billy Gonzales is normally a pretty hard man to please. Whether it's route running, catching the ball or blocking, "Coach G" is constantly trying to get all of his charges to raise their level of play. That effort is to help him figure out which receivers deserve playing time behind Bubba Caldwell and Percy Harvin this fall.

Well at least two of Florida's talented young pass catchers appear to be figuring it out. Gonzales singled out Jarred Fayson and Louis Murphy for their improvement this fall; a clear indication they will be a major part of the Gator passing attack this fall.

Fayson carried the ball 14 times for 126 yards and a touchdown last season, but caught just one pass for one yard. Murphy caught two passes for 42 yards including a 35-yard touchdown against LSU.

Murphy had a strong spring, but didn't stand out in the first few days of camp last week. Fayson has received praise from head coach Urban Meyer for his efforts in fall camp as well as his versatility. Fayson might be Florida's second best running back in addition to being one of the top five receivers. Plus, as a high school quarterback, he can throw the ball and that's something you gotta believe the Gators will showcase at some point.

After practice Wednesday, Gonzales had plenty of good things to say about both young pass catchers.

Gonzales on Louis Murphy...

"Louis has made strides. The summer time has been great for him. He's becoming a man and maturing. He's had his trials and tribulations. Sometimes young men come to a program and they have to get punched in the face a little bit (metaphorically) and not just on the football field but by reality with the decisions that you make. He's a perfect example of a young man who has committed and changed his ways understanding that it's a team concept it's not just Louis Murphy. Louis Murphy is just a small piece of the puzzle and life goes on without him. At the same time, once you buy into the program that piece fits into the puzzle fantastic and all of a sudden things start to work and the puzzle looks a lot nicer."

Gonzales on Jarred Fayson...

"Jarred is becoming an all around guy. You know, he was a quarterback in high school. Last year we used him sparingly but this year his role is significantly increased. He's one of those guys you can use inside, outside and in running plays. He's 200-plus pounds and he can run inside and outside plus we use him as a receiver as well. He's having a fantastic two a days. His work ethic has been fantastic. I'm really expecting a big year out of Jarred Fayson."

Gonzales on the need for the young receivers to be more of a factor...

"You need these guys who were role players last year to step up. Murph was a role player who has two, maybe three or four catches in his career here. Same thing with Coop (Riley Cooper). So those guys got to understand now that it's not just a role. They've got to be able to grade a winning performance on doing their technique for 60 or more plays a game.
