Meyer Evaluating Newest Distraction

Florida head coach Urban Meyer didn't have much to say after Tuesday's practice regarding this morning's arrest of the Gators' starting safety Tony Joiner. For now, Joiner is not practicing with the team.

Urban Meyer would not say if Tony Joiner is suspended from the team and would not comment on his status for Saturday's match-up with the top-ranked LSU Tigers.

"We're still evaluating that," Meyer said. "I don't know the whole story yet. I'm still getting information like a lot of people are."

Joiner was arrested early Tuesday morning after attempting to remove his girlfriend's car from Watson's Towing after the company had impounded the vehicle. Joiner claims he made prior arrangements with Watson's to pick up the vehicle, but no one was at the gate when he arrived to pick it up.

The incident appears to be minor, but it's another occurrence on a long list of run-ins with the law since the Gators won the national championship last January.

"I'm always concerned about that kind of stuff. Everyone across the country is concerned about that," Meyer said. "Every time I read the newspaper and read what's going on in this country and what's going on in this world and what's going on with this football team and what goes on with this campus."

It was the second time since Florida's loss to Auburn on Saturday that the names of Gator players have been connected with the law. Following a shooting outside a Gainesville nightclub early Sunday morning, three members of the team were questioned about the incident.

"I know college kids do stuff," Meyer said. "We just lecture and teach. There are a lot of guys out at 2 a.m. I'd rather our guys would not be out."

Meyer was visibly upset while fielding questions after Tuesday's practice and knows that it will affect the team's preparations before their biggest game of the season.

"These guys are all family and anytime someone has a situation it affects the family," he said.

Notes

  • Andre Caldwell practiced on Tuesday and is expected to play more of role against LSU on Saturday. Said Meyer, "We're really careful with Bubba."
  • As for the practice, it was a typical Bloody Tuesday. Said Meyer, "It was all right. It was a typical Tuesday. We tried to get the new stuff in and get ready for Saturday."
  • Meyer also said that Maurkice Pouncey practiced.
