Big Series For Gator Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. -- Year one for Gator baseball coach Kevin O'Sullivan has gone pretty well to this point. The first-year Florida head man has guided his team to 15-3 record including a sweep of their first SEC series against Auburn last weekend. Now the Gators face their stiffest challenge of the season.

The Gators are on the road for just the second time this season to face the Ole Miss Rebels in a three game set here in Oxford. Florida is facing the best one-two pitching tandem in the SEC in Rebels' righties Lance Lynn (4-0, 1.23) and Cody Satterwhite (2-0, 4.50). The Rebels also boast two of the better hitters in the conference in Cody Overbeck (.407, 6, 23) and Logan Power (.357 (5, 21). Ole Miss comes into the weekend with a 14-6 overall record and took two of three from arch-rival Mississippi State to begin league play.

The first time the Gators played away from McKethan Stadium they threw the ball all over the field in losing the first two games against Miami down in Carol Gables. Florida bounced back from that dismal beginning to claim the final game of that series, but you don't want to make a habit of kicking it around away from home.

It will be interesting to see how O'Sullivan approaches these games strategically. Generally against top pitching you want to play for an early run and continue playing for one run throughout the contest. The Gators have been excellent on the bases this season, and their ability to manufacture runs is pretty well established.

Nick Belmonte and I will have the call on the first two games of the series on FSN Florida. Friday's game is at 7:30 with the Saturday contest at 2:30. A winning weekend just might get people in Gainesville thinking about an SEC race. Not bad after two straight years of sitting out the NCAA Tournament.
