Georgetown Forward Headed to Gainesville

For his first two seasons at Georgetown, things just didn't work out, so 6-9, 230-pound forward Vernon Macklin has decided to transfer to the University of Florida.

FoxSports.com reports that Vernon Macklin committed to Gator head coach Billy Donovan during a visit to Gainesville this weekend.

As a sophomore, Macklin averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 points with a Hoyas team that lost to Davidson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman, Macklin averaged 2.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9.8 minutes played per game.

The addition of Macklin to the Gator roster brings uch needed size and strength to a team that was lacking during the 2007-08 season. However, it may be a year before Gator fans see exactly what the Portsmouth, Va. native is capable of since the NCAA requires transfers to sit out a season.

Macklin played with Marreese Speights at the Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Although the two may never get to play together since Speights is looking into entering the NBA Draft.
