Gators Need to Win

Six games remain in the SEC race and the Florida Gator baseball team still has work to do to earn a spot in the SEC Tournament let alone the field of 64 for the NCAA. Florida will take a 29-18 overall record and 13-11 SEC mark into a three game series with Alabama.

The Gators would not be eliminated this weekend even if they get swept, but for a lot of reasons Florida needs to win two games in Tuscaloosa.

First, Florida has lost four of its last five SEC series, a stretch that took the team from conference title contenders to the middle of the pack. Right now the Gators would be tied for the fourth seed in the SEC, and finishing in the top half of the league would lockup an NCAA bid for certain.

Secondly, the Gators now lose SEC tie-breakers with Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and South Carolina. All four of those teams are within two-and-a-half games of the Gators and a losing weekend would make that even closer. A losing weekend would also put Florida behind Alabama (12-12) in the SEC pecking order in addition to making the Crimson Tide another team to have a tie-breaker advantage.

Thirdly, the Gators could use a shot of confidence right now. Florida got a boost from winning two of three from SEC leading Georgia, but turned right around and dropped a series at South Carolina before holding on for dear life against Bethune Cookman. Florida's only winning series in SEC road play was at Ole Miss. Since that trip the Gators have lost 9 of 12 games away from home. Since hosting an NCAA Regional is virtually impossible, the Gators need to prove to themselves that they can win big games on the road.

Remaining SEC Schedule May 9-11

Kentucky (11-13) @ Tennessee (11-13) ---
These two teams are currently tide for the eighth and final spot in the SEC Tournament. The loser of this series will probably need help in the final weekend to reach Birmingham. Neither team is playing great, but the Vols are really scuffling with six losses in a row.

South Carolina (13-11) @ Arkansas (10-13) --- The Gamecocks are looking to solidify their spot while Arkansas could slide into the No. 8 spot if they can win the series at home. A series loss could be fatal to the Hogs.

Auburn (10-14) @ Ole Miss (12-12) --- The Tigers are trying to finish strongly and are not out of the SEC picture yet. Ole Miss has led the West most of the season, but has slipped an eyelash behind LSU.

Georgia (17-6-1) @ Vanderbilt (14-9) --- The top two teams in the SEC should have a nice, feisty weekend in the Music City. The outcome won't have much impact unless Vandy were to get swept and have some added pressure on their upcoming weekend in Gainesville. That's not likely considering how well the ‘Dores are playing. Georgia is the SEC Champ if they win two out of three.

Mississippi State (7-17) @ LSU (12-11-1) --- LSU is the hottest team in the SEC and now leads the West. They take a nine game winning streak into the weekend and get to host league cellar dweller MSU. Since the West winner will be the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament no matter what, LSU doesn't need a big weekend, but they're likely to get one anyway.
