Telep Gives Solid Ranking to '09 Prospects

If basketball analyst Dave Telep knows what he's doing -- and I assure you he does – the Florida Gators will be adding a couple of solid players in 2009 commitments Erik Murphy and DeShawn Painter. The two both received top 50 rankings in Telep's latest assessment of next year's high school senior class.

Murphy, a 6-10, 220-pound forward from Southborough, Massachusetts is rated No. 26 overall and is considered the 10th best power forward in the country. Painter, who is headed to Hargrave Military Academy is listed at 6-9, 195-pounds and checks in at No. 43, 14th among power forwards. Both players are considered excellent inside scorers/finishers with Murphy having a bit more polish and Painter a better shot blocker.

But don't take my word for it. Here's Telep's update on the two Gator commitments:

On Erik Murphy --- "This is the skill guy in the class. He's a really hard worker who does a nice job owning his area and finishing through the rim. Murphy is going to be a very good college player and is the more ready of the two big guys in this class"

On DeShawn Painter --- "I love this guy long term. He's so coachable and wants to be good. Most of what he does comes in spurts. He's got great size and defensively is well suited for the press."

The class may not end up being just a two man signing group. Florida would like to add a guard to the 2009-10 roster and topping the wish list has to be combo guard Kenny Boynton from American Heritage in Plantation. The high scoring guard was a prep teammate of incoming Gator freshman Eloy Vargas last season. Telep ranks Boynton the No. 2 shooting guard in the country.

On Kenny Boynton --- "He is one of the top scoring threats in his class. Boynton is currently working on rounding out his point guard package as he's already a prolific scorer. Kenny hunts his shot and sticks difficult jumpers. He might be the best clutch shooter in this class."

Boynton has the talent and grades to go just about anywhere he wants to. He recently made a trip to Duke to visit with coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils. It is believed that Duke and Florida are ahead of Boynton's other finalists Texas, Memphis and Georgia Tech.
