My Take - Linebackers

As the Gators opened practice today, we take a look at the linebacker position and how it impacts this year's recruits. The Gators have a total of nine linebackers on scholarship on the current roster.

Brandon Spikes and Dustin Doe are the lone juniors on the team with Ryan Stamper being the only redshirt junior. The Gators have four sophomore linebackers with Lorenzo Edwards, Brandon Hicks, John Jones and A.J. Jones. The two freshmen are Lerentee McCray and Brendan Beal.

With the recent move of wide receiver T.J. Lawrence to safety, I don't want to speculate who if any of this year's linebackers might make the move to safety if needed. So for now I am working off the number nine for argument's sake.

It is no secret that Florida has had two players at the top of the linebacker wish list for quite sometime. They are Jon Bostic and Jarvis Jones. I spoke to Jon Bostic today, he informed me that he was at Florida yesterday watching some of the players work out and becoming more comfortable with the campus.

"My visit was real good," Bostic said. "I went back up because my sister had a basketball camp at UF, so I just called up coach Gonzales and asked him if I could come over and hang out for a little while."

Most will tell you that it is a three team race between Florida, Miami and LSU, but in the end I like Florida's chances here. Bostic is 6-3, 230-pounds from Wellington (Fla.) Palm Beach Central High School. Both of his parents want to make sure he takes his time and doesn't rush into anything and will leave it up to him, but I believe everyone around Bostic is going to help the cause and get him to Gainesville.

Jarvis Jones has been one of the most talked about recruits in the southeast. Jones, from Columbus (Ga.) Carver High School recently took a visit to LSU. I have heard so many different things on him over the past couple of months. For example, one week it's Clemson and another LSU then I hear Texas is coming on strong. What I do know is that ever since he took a trip to Florida, the staff has been trying to get him back down. Over the last six weeks or so, he has scheduled trips to Florida only to be postponed. I am very confident (as much as I can be at this time) that Jones will make a visit to Florida before the season starts.

Jones is a beast in every aspect of the word. He is listed at 6-4, 210-pounds but told me last week he is currently 223. At the end of the day, these are the two backers that have been at the top of the board and Florida has a great shot to go 2-for-2 at the linebacker position.

The last time that I spoke with Mr. Jenkins (Jelani's dad) he told me that they would also pay Florida a visit before the season starts. I don't see Jenkins in this class at this time but certainly is a real possibility moving forward depending on what happens with the other two players listed above.

Watch List 2010:

  • Gerald Christian, from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) William T. Dwyer is currently 6-3, 230-pounds and a current teammate of Matt Elam.
  • Gideon Ajagbe, from Coconut Grove (Fla.) Ransom Everglades is 6-1, 205-pounds but could certainly grow into the linebacker position over the next two years.
  • Another player to keep an eye on is Tyrone Cornileus. Cornileus was the most impressive linebacker after Bostic at Friday Night Lights. From Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson High School, Cornileus is 6-1 3/4 and right at the 188-pound mark. Cornileus can play numerous positions and will line up as the tailback for Stephenson when the play a controlled scrimmage on August 22.
