Sunday Odds and Ends

When Urban Meyer fielded questions from the media on Sunday morning during his weekly teleconference, he hadn't watched the defensive game film yet. But he had received some comments from the coaching staff who had already taken a look at the Gators' performance against Hawaii.

"I have asked some of our coaches who said there were a lot of mistakes, however, they played hard which is all I care about," Urban Meyer said.

He did say, though, that the defensive line wasn't quite up to par yet. And he's aware that the D-line will be tested when Miami comes to The Swamp next Saturday night. The Hurricanes faced Charleston Southern on Thursday night, and although they're not nearly what the Gators will throw at them defensively, Miami rushed for more than 200 yards in the game, averaging close to six yards per carry.

"I don't think we were challenged the way that we'll be challenged this week," Meyer said. "I think Miami is going to come in here and try to pound it against us. Our goal all summer was to improve our pass defense because it was one of the worst in America last year. I thought our guys did a very good job preparing our players, and I look forward to this one."

In the secondary, Meyer was asked about cornerback Joe Haden, and Meyer gave the sophomore high marks.

"Joe is one of the top five most talented players on our team, and I think we're a talented team," he said. "The fact that he's never played corner is mind-boggling. On special teams, he did great. On defense, he did great. You can tell that he's comfortable out there."

It was a good day on Saturday for Florida football, but it was also a good day for the other two programs that Meyer has left his stamp on. Utah upset Michigan at the Big House, 25-23, and Bowling Green upset Pitt, 27-17.

"Wasn't that great?" Meyer said. "I was burning up my minutes calling up everyone and telling them how proud I was of them. Those were not good wins, they were great wins by a bunch of good coaches and players."
