Burton Family Diary #12

In this week's football diary Cindy Burton-Macfarlane talks about a 10-0 perfect season, last week's win and the first round of the playoff march.

Trey Burton profile

10-0, the perfect regular season. Only four teams in Venice High School's 57 years of fielding a football team have accomplished this great feat, the last time being the 2000 team who won the State Championship in The Swamp.

We beat Booker High School in Sarasota 28-14. It wasn't a pretty win, numerous penalties, sloppy substitutions, but Booker made more mistakes than we did, and we were able to capitalize on their mistakes. Trey ended up with three touchdowns, and although we struggled in the pass protection area, we are improving each week in our run blocking. Booker is a very athletic team, but our defense was outstanding. Clayton was defensive player of the week, earning eight helmet stickers for things like a fumble recovery, two sacks and two quarterback pressures. He is still competing for his spot as defensive end, but he also played tight end and told me he wants to block for Trey.

We have home field advantage for the playoffs this Friday against Cape Coral, a team that beat us last year in round one. Coach Peacock said at the Touchdown/Linebacker dinner last night that we are looking for "redemption". t should be a very emotional battle in front of a large home crowd. My boys are sleeping a lot, so I am happy about that.

Trey spoke at both services at our church this Sunday, and three of his teammates accepted Christ as their personal Savior. Trey understands those decisions last for eternity. He was very determined to speak to his teammates and let them know that God loves them. He is becoming quite a leader. The message Pastor Tom gave was about Joshua taking over for Moses. I'm not sure if Pastor Tom knew the significance of that message, but Tim Tebow and Moses have a lot in common! And in my heart I now refer to Trey as Joshua.

In Moms in Touch this morning we prayed John 15:16 for the boys, "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, He may give it to you."
