Black will be Watching Nole Receivers

When the Gators and Noles suit up this weekend, Florida will face a dynamic wide receiver on the other side of the ball. Greg Carr has 29 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns this season, but even more impressive is his 6-6, 217-pound frame.

Safety Ahmad Black has had a memorable season, picking off six passes with two touchdowns for the Gators this season. But keeping an eye on Carr will be one of his biggest tasks on Saturday.

"You have to get better position," Black said. "He's not that much stronger, so you just have to get better position. You have to get your light shoes on so you can jump high."

It's not just Carr that Black has to be worried about. There's lots of talent on Florida State's offense this season, but the man in charge is quarterback Christian Ponder. Ponder is not only a throwing threat, but also a threat to run.

"We have to contain him," Black said. "It's when he gets freed up on the outside that he likes to run a little. They run a little bit of option and a little triple option. They run a lot of reverses, too."

The Noles' passing game isn't anything complex, but Black said the Gators need to stay disciplined in their coverage.

"They don't do too much throwing," Black said. "They do a lot of deep stuff and underneath stuff, so if we can take care of the bubble screens and the deep balls we should be fine."

This will be a big game for Black, since the former Lakeland standout grew up rooting for Florida State. He said he put most of his rooting interests aside when the recruiting process began, but he fully understands the significance of the Florida/Florida State rivalry.

"It's a big week," he said. "We have to keep our minds off of next week and the BCS and all that hoopla going on and just focus on the game. We just have to take it week by week and focus on one game at a time."

And Black's not worried about the Gators heading in the hostile Doak Campbell Stadium.

"I think the whole team is confident going into that environment and can just block out the crowd and focus," Black said. "I think there's a lot of motivation for us not just because of the national championship, but because of the crowd and it's a rival game. I think the rival game spices it up a little bit."
