"Saturday morning I decided to commit to head coach Urban Meyer and the Gators," Edwin Herbert said. "I was in his office and he was real fired up and said that I can come in next year and contribute and make an impact. Why should I go anywhere else? I can play early at Florida and compete and win a national title with the Gators. I am coming to the No. 1 team in the nation from the No. 1 JUCO team in the nation."
This was the first time that Herbert had a chance to see The Swamp and it lived up to the hype.
"It was so impressive to see it in person," he said. For me to play in the Southeastern Conference and at a school like Florida is a dream come true."
Many Gator fans don't know that much about Edwin Herbert and he wanted to make sure that everyone knows a couple of things about him.
"I am going to do whatever it takes to win and that is the bottom line," Herbert said. "It doesn't matter if it's the weight room, film room, practice or whatever it might be, I am going to get to the quarterback. Relentless effort is what I bring to the table and I want everyone to know it and that's what the coaches and fans can expect out of me. In my last bowl game that I played in I finished with 12 tackles, three for loss and one sack."
"I went to Florida on Thursday and left on Saturday. I went by myself and when I arrived I went and checked into my hotel then went and had something to eat with both coach Dan McCarney and coach Meyer. It was the first time meeting coach Meyer in person; he is a real smart coach and knows how to run his football team. Dinner was very casual just trying to get to know each other. The next day we started to really break down football and things like that, but at dinner we just enjoyed each other's company. After dinner, I went out with Omar Hunter, Jeff Demps, Jelani Jenkins and William Green. It was my first time meeting with all of those guys. It was real nice I had a chance to go and chill with all of them for a while."
If Thursday's time spent with Meyer wasn't enough, Friday's events were equally as impressive for the big defensive tackle.
"On Friday, when I met with McCarney and Meyer again they talked to me about football and the state of the defensive line. The facilities were the best I have ever seen. It seems like the best place to prepare yourself for the NFL. Later on Friday, I watched practice and it was real cool. The tempo and order in which they do things I could see myself being a part of that process. The most impressive thing for me on this trip was everything about it; it could not have gone any better."
