But those two maneuvers were downright brilliant compared to their final one in this saga. The hiring of Gene Chizik has to rank as one of the worst selections in recent SEC history. This hire is worse than Ed Orgeron, worse than Bill Curry, worse than Gerry DiNardo and yes, far worse than Ron Zook.
Chizik was a good defensive coordinator at Auburn and was a walkon linebacker at Florida in the '80s. He had been the head coach at Iowa State for the past two years. It's his stint in Ames, Iowa that has people wondering how on earth he ended up with one of the 20 best jobs in college football.
In two years with the Cyclones, Chizik had a miserable 5-19 record. His performance in Big 12 play was even worse at 2-14. Folks in the Midwest are livid that he would bolt having accomplished nothing positive for the school which gave him his first head coaching opportunity. Folks in Auburn are likely to be equally upset. You know you got it wrong when the old school AND the new school are angry.
Auburn should have chosen Turner Gil. The former Nebraska star has done a remarkable job in turning around the worst program in the country at Buffalo. He would have given Auburn the only black head coach in the conference, which would carry some recruiting benefits. He would give them a coach who had actually led his team to a conference championship and bowl game in just three years. He would have given them a buzz.
Chizik may do well at Auburn and prove me wrong, but on the surface Auburn blew it.
Auburn Completely Blew It
