Meyer to see Gillislee Today

Sometimes there are speed bumps in the recruiting process and other times there are potholes that are difficult to get through. DeLand's Mike Gillislee is a big time back that had a little speed bump in his recruitment this season when he wavered on his commitment to Florida for about a week. Tuesday, Urban Meyer will be in DeLand to make sure that Gillislee is ready to be a Gator.

Mike Gillislee took his official visit to Gainesville on the week of January 16 and evidently came away happy enough to be a Gator that he dropped any plans to visit elsewhere. A big time ball carrier, Urban Meyer will be in DeLand to make sure everything is in line for next Wednesday's national signing day.

"I guess it went great, we really didn't talk about it," DeLand Head Coach Kevin Pettis said about Gillislee's official visit two weekends ago. "I know Coach Meyer will be on campus on Tuesday to see him and his mom. I know he is really ready to sign."

Pettis talked about the short month long period where coaches from different schools were on Gillislee. It was a time when the Gators had a lot to deal with and other schools were home watching the Gators play television or out trying to poach their commitments. Pettis talked about the reason for Gillislee wavering.

"I don't know if there was anything in particular other than during the time when Florida was preparing for the SEC and National Championship, he had some other coaches that were in his ear," Pettis said. "Coaches were recruiting him during the time that Florida was preoccupied. He committed so early and that is a long time to keep people at bay. I think he was just curious."

Pettis is going to miss his star tailback. Gillislee is a talented ball carrier and adept and running or catching the ball. He's not like all the rest of the big backs out there.

"Mike isn't a typical big back," Pettis said. "He's 6-1, and 205 pounds but he isn't a typical big back. He can run like a little guy. He has great top end speed and he can make you hurt i you give him a crease. He's just a great runner and a great back."
