Peach State DB Names a Leader

The Peach state is loaded with talent this year and one of the state's best has the Gators at the top. Pernell Williams is a 6-2, 175-pound cornerback/safety and has the kind of speed that defensive backs coaches love.

Pernell Williams has been timed as low as 4.4 in the 40. Williams is from Douglas (GA) Coffee High School and currently has offers from Clemson and South Carolina and is receiving attention from a host of others, including Florida and Georgia Tech.

Williams is coming off a fantastic junior season ending the year with 77 tackles, 58 assists, four interceptions, 20 pass breakups and one sack. He plays wide receiver, safety and corner and wants to play on the defensive side of the ball at the next level.

While it is still early, Williams has his top five and the current national champs are once again sitting at the top.

"My top five looks like this Florida, Clemson, Georgia, South Carolina, Georgia Tech," Williams said. "The University of Florida defense prides itself on being fast and physical. I feel like I would be a great asset to the program. I haven't met any of the players yet but look forward to meeting them next month."

It's another Southeastern school that Williams has ties with.

"My sister ran track at Georgia and my brother-in-law played football for Georgia."

Williams talked about a few of his strengths.

"I feel like I have great coverage skills, hands, leaping ability, and have great awareness on the field," he said. "I also like to play physical. As a cornerback, I feel like I always can work on my footwork and knowledge of the game."

While Williams doesn't know a lot about the defensive scheme the Gators run he is very interested in learning.

"I have been to Clemson and Georgia both over the summer for camps," Williams said. "I currently plan on visiting Georgia on March 21 and then Florida on March 28. I have also been invited to the Nike Combine at Georgia on April 25."

His favorite team growing up was the Miami Hurricanes and favorite player is Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
