Hampton Picks the Gators

The Florida Gators picked up their fifth commitment on Thursday when Charlotte (NC) Independence cornerback Victor Hampton made the call. At 5-11, 170-pounds, Hampton comes from a high school Gator fans know well - the same school that former Gator QB Chris Leak attended.

"I talked to Coach [Kenny] Carter this morning and told him I wanted to verbal to the University of Florida," Hampton said. "Then I talked to Coach Meyer and my soon-to-be position coach, Coach Bedford, and told him I wanted to be a Gator. They all told me they have very high expectations and I have higher expectations for myself. They are real glad to have me and I am glad to be a Gator."

"I've been talking to the coaches a lot and I love them and know they will keep me on the right track," he said. "Plus my mom loves the feel from Florida."

Hampton has other offers from Clemson, Georgia, NC State, Tennessee and South Carolina. During his junior season, he had 10 picks and more than 50 tackles for Independence.

"I want all Florida fans and coaches to know they have a player that's willing to step up to any challenge and will be a great leader," Hampton said.
