The Champs Latest to Offer Watkins

With scholarship offers recently rolling in from Tennessee, Florida State, Alabama and Ohio State, the Florida Gators added their name in the mix for the services of Cape Coral cornerback Jaylen Watkins. At 6-0 and 175 pounds and running a 4.4 in the 40, Watkins seems ideal for the cornerback position at the next level. The Gators evidently think so.

I could sense the excitement in his voice as Watkins told me he got an offer he had been anticipating for a while now. It was Gator cornerback Coach Vance Bedford who he called to find out. Bedford knows a thing or two about coaching All-Americans at the position, and didn't waste too much time passing along the news.

"I just got off the phone with Coach Bedford and he said they are going to extend me an offer," Watkins said. "I was supposed to call Coach Addazio and Coach Meyer earlier, but I was at track practice and I couldn't. I saw an email earlier that said to call him and I was hoping it was going to be an offer. He just asked how I was doing and said he was letting me know they were extending an offer."

A day ago the Crimson Tide was firmly entrenched as the leader for Watkins. So, have things changed with the home state offer?

"It definitely pushes Florida up the list," Watkins said. "It is out of Alabama and Florida now. I will be up (at Florida) for the spring game and a couple of spring practices."

It isn't really too surprising that Watkins might be enamored with an offer from the BCS Champions. He has some fairly connected friends pushing him to the Gators. Gator senior cornerback Markihe Anderson has known Watkins and his family for quite some time.

"Markihe Anderson and his family and my family are really close," he said. "We played Pop Warner when I was little. Every time we see them they try and push it on me. Whenever I see him when he comes down he always something about I need to be a Gator. When I see him I know it's coming."

The offers are rolling in pretty quickly and he received a written offer from Ohio State today. Jaylen Watkins is getting it from everywhere, but he said it may take a little time to make a final decision.

"I will sit down with my parents and my Grandpa," he said. "Right now I have no idea how long it will take."

Scout.com will be watching this one very closely. Stay tuned.
