Dowling Talks about his Decision

When 6-3.5, 187-pound super safety prospect Jonathan Dowling decided to become a Gator he told us that head coach Urban Meyer "Got Crunk." Fightin' Gators caught up with the star from Bradenton (FL) Southeast High School to see how that visit unfolded leading to his decision.

"I went up with my mom and dad," Dowling said. "The first person we saw was Coach Meyer and he was real glad to see me again. Coach Meyer and I have a great relationship. Later I met with Coach Heater and he laid out a plan for me. He didn't make me any promises, which is good because I like to work for everything that I get. We were walking on the field and there was no one in the entire stadium. I wanted to play right then and there. When it was time, I went up to meet with Coach Meyer in his office and I shook his hand and told him I felt like home and I was ready to be a Gator. My parents are real proud of me, I mean who wouldn't want their child to be a Gator. It was a real cool day. I got a chance to meet up with Matt Elam for a minute and Trey Burton came over and welcomed me to the Gator family. I am focusing on my grades right now because I want to enroll early at Florida to get a head start and winning state next year."

Jonathan Dowling ended his junior season with 14 interceptions, 58 tackles, two defensive touchdowns, three blocked punts and eight pass breakups.

Recruited for the free safety position, Dowling has a bench press of 240-pounds, squat of 320-pounds and a 245-pound power clean to go along with his 4.5 speed. Dowling feels relieved to have this decision out of the way, so he can concentrate on getting bigger, faster and stronger.
