Spring Practice Report - Day 10

It was a "shells" day meaning only the upper pads and helmets were on and players were supposed to "thud", meaning hit but not tackle. The defense took it a little too far at times, but they have been very aggressive so far this spring. Will Hill was likely the player of the day with his two interceptions in the 2-minute drill. Here are some quick thoughts on the Gators' practice from Friday.

The injury front was a mixed bag as another player or two returned and at least one more missed Friday and will likely miss Saturday's scrimmage. Senior linebacker Dustin Doe was back on the field Friday and running with the first team as was sophomore offensive tackle Matt Patchan who played sparingly and late during this practice session.

Missing on the day were junior safety Major Wright who we don't know why, and junior running back Emmanuel Moody who had a pin inserted into his hand on Friday but is expected to be back practicing on Monday.

During practice redshirt freshman wide receiver T.J. Lawrence was injured and possibly sophomore quarterback John Brantley on the last play.

There were also some fluctuating lineups on the day which included Lorenzo Edwards running a lot with the first string at Sam linebacker right now ahead of Ryan Stamper. A.J. Jones and Brandon Hicks are out with injuries. Omar hunter and Jaye Howard watched Troy Epps and Edwin Herbert work with the first group as the came in with the second group at the two defensive tackle positions.

Byran Jones was at left guard with the first unit and right guard with the second unit during parts of the session. However, the offensive line is constantly in flux and there were probably nine different players running with the first group at any given time today.

The defense had a few highlights in the 7-on-7 passing drills.

Joe Haden had a nice pass breakup followed by a Janoris Jenkins pass break up...Ryan Stamper tackles a quick outside pass to Justin Williams...Janoris Jenkins jumped on a second pass and intercepts the pass to Justin Williams from Tebow.

During the team portion it was a lot of the same, with the defense ruling the roost most of the time. However, Christopher Scott, Carl Moore, and Paul Wilson turned in nice days during these portions of practice.

Scott comes out of the back end of a running play that looked to be stopped and gets about 20 yards...Justin Williams drops the ball – can't do that with the competition at receiver right now and as much of a chance as anyone to get on the field...Defensive end Carlos Dunlap was in there killing Corey Hobbs on a few plays...William Green blocked a Tim Tebow pass...Paul Wilson with two very solid catches over the middle from Tim Tebow...Assistant defensive coordinator Chuck Heater was not happy with true freshman linebacker Bostic hitting Paul Wilson while already on the ground. "Bostic, if you are on the ground again you run."--Heater said meaning do not tackle another player...Tebow hits Cade Holliday on a seam route for a long touchdown, burning safeties Will hill and Ahmad Black on the play...Carl Moore caught a nice seam route over on the left hash for a long play.

2-Minute drill

The defense wins again as they did not allow a score and only allowed the offense inside the 30 twice in seven tries. Here are some highlights.

Rainey and Scott both had nice runs in the 2 minute drill...Edwards with a sack on Tebow...Will Hill with a nice interception breaking on a Tebow pass over the middle...The first team offense moved about 30 yards on the first drive only to have Hill intercept.

Brantley comes in on the second drive and moves the ball quickly to about the plus 40...A beautiful catch and run to T.J. Lawrence resulted in a long gainer to the one yard line at the end of the drive, but Lawrence came up a little gimpy. He didn't return, but he walked it off and it didn't appear to be too serious...The offense did stall at the one as time expired in the two minute drill.

Tebow was picked off again by Hill on the second play in the first team's second attempt at the 2 minute drill. This time it was a long pass along the left sideline that Tebow overthrew everyone but the blazing Hill.

Tebow hit Cade Holliday in back to back post patterns to get the ball down to about the 30 yard line...Dustin Doe hits Tebow as he was throwing on the next play and the ball fell incomplete...Matt Patchan played well in this last series and on one particular play had to hold off a hard charging 300 pound Jaye Howard playing end on a three man line. Patchan was playing left tackle and bowed up to stop Howard nicely on the play....on the last play a pass to Aaron Hernandez in the back of the end zone was broken up by Dustin Doe and Ahmad Black.

Brantley is back in and hands off to Christopher Scott who gets five yards on first down...Bostic jumps in front of Scott for an interception of Brantley on the second play.

Post pattern to Justin Williams from Brantley for 20 yards down field and in mid air Dorian Munroe smacks him and makes him lose the ball...Brantley sacked by Okine and Hunter and is hurt (probably okay), and that was end of practice.

Prospects are still streaming into practice in Gainesville as the Gators are on their way to another top recruiting class. The biggest news of the day came when four-star cornerback Jaylen Watkins committed to the Gators to Coach Meyer hours before practice and confirmed so before practice.

Gator commitments Jonathan Dowling and Trey Burton were also seen at practice. Defensive tackle Jordan White, wide receiver Bo Ceravolo, running back Jeremy Deering, offensive lineman Juwuan James, among others were in attendance.
