"My heart was at Florida," said Leak moments ago. "They made an honest commitment to my future. Honestly, all five schools were great but I just went with my gut feeling. Florida's offense is very similiar to mine, even the terminology. When I went down there for camp, everything just seemed to click with them and Coach Zaunbrecher. I know with preparation and hard work, everything will work itself out. I just want to go to Florida and help my teammates win a national championship."
Ironically, Florida lost their franchise QB in Rex Grossman the day before Leak's verbal. In fact, Leak sounded as if he would have liked to spent a year learning under Grossman.
"Honestly, I made my decision before he made his. I would have loved to have learned from Rex and let him be my tutor. That would have been awesome. Rex leaving in no way affected my decision. I will just work hard and try to help the team win. If I have to wait for the opportunity and red-shirt, that's fine too. I just want that chance."
Leak, being as popular as he is, could be a recruiting magnet for Florida in their efforts over the course of the next month. With that being said, Leak has already hit the recruiting trail.
"I have talked with some of the guys and found out what schools they liked. I told them I hope they come to Florida but to also follow their heart."
Leak had an amazing high school career. He threw for 15,593 yards and 185 touchdown passes (national record). Along the way, he won three straight state titles. Leak, 6-1 and 205 pounds, was also named the MVP of both the Shrine Bowl and the All-American Bowl.
Here is a statement he read at halftime of the All-American Bowl when he committed to Florida.
"First I want to thank ESPN for giving me this opportunity to announce my college choice. Going through the recruiting process, I had three questions. First, where can I get a great education. Second, could I trust what I was being told. And third, could I play a part in winning a national championship. Texas, Iowa, Southern Cal, Florida and Florida State are all great programs that I trust and this made my decision tough. However, I am asking all the top recruits to join me and win a national championship. Out of all the schools that are recruiting me, there is one that has made a commitment to my future that is second to none. With that commitment, I am being trusted what I have been told and following my heart. Today, I am committing to Ron Zook and the University of Florida."
