Butler Named to USA Staff

Florida women's basketball coach Amanda Butler will spend part of this summer coaching some of the best young players in the nation. Florida's mentor has been named to the staff for USA Basketball's U19 team. She will work under head coach Carol Owens and Northern Illinois. Bill Fennelly of Iowa State is also on the staff.

In a University of Florida news release, Butler talked about her selection.

"It's an overwhelming honor just to be considered and to be in that conversation of possibilities and to actually be selected, for me it's staggering," Butler said. "It's something I'm very excited about and something I'm looking forward to. I'm going to put every ounce of energy and effort I can into it in making sure we handle our business.

"Carol Owens is someone whose reputation precedes her, everyone recognizes her in the basketball community as an outstanding individual and someone who contributed to one of the most successful eras in Notre Dame history. Bill Fennelly's resume speaks for itself as well especially with this year's team's success. It was a historic year for their programs. Both of them are great individuals who are very, very talented coaches and I've enjoyed the small bit of time I've had to share with them and I think there will be great chemistry between the three of us."

Butler just completed her second season on the Florida bench and led her team to a school record-tying 24 wins and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Florida posted a win in the 64-team event before falling in the second round to eventual national champ Connecticut. In her two years in Gainesville she has posted a record of 43-22.

The U19 team is comprised of the best players in the country who were born after January1, 1990. The team selection begins with tryouts in May, at which finalists for the squad will be chosen. Those finalists will gather in June and a 12-member team will be chosen to compete in the World U19 Championships in Thailand.

Florida coaches have long been involved in coaching teams in national and international competition. The experience of coaching at this level along with the exposure she'll get from this opportunity should combine to help Butler as she continues to try and build a consistent winner at Florida.
