Let The Competition Begin

Quarterback Justin Midgett talks about the Chris Leak commitment and the upcoming quarterback battle.

The Florida Gators are sitting pretty in regards to the most important position on the field. Coming into this recruiting season, they wanted to sign two big-time quarterback prospects. That need is filled. Justin Midgett committed to Ron Zook and the Gators back in the early Spring. This past Sunday night, Chris Leak committed to the University of Florida. Now, two of the nation's top six quarterbacks are headed to Gainesville. Or are they? Midgett, from Punta Gorda (Fla.) Charlotte High School, is now considering taking a trip or two. This weekend, he will be in Gainesville to take his official to Florida.

"I may take a couple of trips," said Midgett. "I may visit Tennessee... maybe FSU. When I committed, I kind of cut everyone off. I have not talked with anyone is a while. But I may look around just to make sure."

Midgett has known all along that Florida would take two signal callers and he has known that Leak and JaMarcus Russell were at the top of Florida's quarterback wish list. Will Justin de-commit and sign with someone else?

The chances are remote. After all, he is a Gator fan and has been for most of his life. And Midgett welcomes the challenge for Florida's future quarterback.

"I have seen Chris play. We camped together at Elite 11. I like his confidence in what he said the other night. But that doesn't change my view. I will do my own thing and I welcome all challengers. I know if I play my game, I will be successful and the competition will make us both better players. I am still a Gator and I want to lead them to a national championship too."

Let the competition begin.
