Gator Sweep Dawgs as Post-Season Nears

The Gator baseball team all but assured itself of post-season play Sunday with a stirring 10-8 over Georgia completing a three-game sweep in Athens. The sweep improved the Gators to 34-14 on the year and 16-8 in SEC play. Florida is now in a three-way tie atop the SEC with LSU and Ole Miss.

The win was a tough one for the Gators to get. Florida trailed 7-4 before scoring six runs in the ninth inning and then holding on for the victory. Preston Tucker's three-run homer, his 11th of the season put the Gators on top and Jerico Weitzel's two run single gave them some needed breathing room. Billy Bullock gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth, but still earned his tenth save of the season and second of the weekend.

The Gator baseball team was dreadful on the road last season, winning just seven of 25 games away from McKethan Stadium. However this weekend puts the Gators at 10-8 when not at home with six of those wins in SEC play and four of the six against ranked teams.

With just two weeks to go in the regular season the Gators are not hoping to get an NCAA bid. They are instead focused on winning an SEC Title and perhaps earning the right to host a regional and maybe even a Super Regional if it comes to that. After Sunday's action in the SEC here's how the team's shape up with six games to go.

Florida 16-8
LSU 16-8
Ole Miss 16-8
Arkansas 14-9
Alabama 14-9
Georgia 14-10

Those six teams are contenders for the league title and all will be playing in the NCAA Tournament as well. The rest of the league has some work to do.

South Carolina 12-12
Vanderbilt 10-13
Kentucky 9-15
Auburn 8-16
Miss State 6-17

The Gators have a big showdown series at LSU next weekend before finishing the season against Kentucky in Gainesville. A month ago it looked like the Gators would be begging for NCAA consideration with a 21-12 record and just a 7-6 SEC mark. However Florida has now won 13-of-15 including 9-of-11 in the SEC and now no goal is out of reach.
