SEC Baseball Getting Stronger in Polls

A glance at the latest Baseball America rankings shows a growing appreciation for the quality of baseball in the Southeastern Conference this year. Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season the best six teams in the SEC are all ranked in the top 25.

All eyes will be on Baton Rouge, Louisiana this weekend as No. 3 LSU entertains No. 11 Florida. Both teams have been playing well and are tied with Ole Miss atop the SEC at 16-8 in league play.

The other ranked teams are Ole Miss (No. 7), Arkansas (No. 17), Alabama (No. 21) and Georgia (No. 22). It's been a fast fall for Georgia which has been ranked at the top during the season but is now just barely hanging in the top 25.

Generally speaking the top 16 teams should be given the opportunity to host NCAA Regional tournaments. That means the Gators are in good, but not great shape in that regard. Florida would be in great shape with a series win at LSU. You can see that LSU and Ole Miss should be all but set while Arkansas and the other ranked teams have work to do.

It gets even more interesting when you see that Florida State (No. 16) and Miami (No. 19) are both in range of earning a host slot. There's a decent chance the NCAA will award two Regionals to the State of Florida but three is doubtful. FSU faces a huge series this weekend at No. 9 Georgia Tech.

This could make the month of May the most interesting one around here in quite a while.
