Monday Baseball Update

Six games remain to be played before the fields will be set for the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals. Six of the top eight national seeds have already advanced to the next round with only No. 6 Cal-Irvine and No. 7 Oklahoma coming up short. The Sooners were ousted at home by the Arkansas Razorbacks, while the Anteaters (yes, the ANTEATERS) saw Virginia win the Regional on their home field.

Three SEC teams are moving on and two more will try to do so tonight. Let's go through each situation heading into Monday's Regional Finals.

#1 Texas Longhorns ----- Texas has advanced and will host Texas Christian in the Super Regional.

#2 Cal-State Fullerton ----- The Titans cruised at home and will host the winner of the Louisville/Vanderbilt game. The Gators played both teams three times this year and would probably recommend that Fullerton root for Louisville to avoid that Vandy pitching staff.

#3 LSU Tigers ----- No school does a better job of playing its best late in the year. Next up for LSU is the winner of Kansas State and Rice.

#4 North Carolina Tar Heels ----- The best team in the ACC top to bottom will play a Carolina team in the Super Regional. They just don't know if it's going to be East Carolina or South Carolina.

#5 Arizona State Sun Devils ----- ASU moves on to the "sweet 16" of baseball and will host either Clemson or Oklahoma State.

#8 Florida Gators ----- Outscoring the Miami Hurricanes 24-7 in two games allowed the Gators to oust Miami from the tournament for the first time in many, many tries. The Gators will welcome either Southern Miss or Georgia Tech to McKethan Stadium.

Two Super Regionals didn't set up according to form. One is all set; the other can go several ways.

Arkansas @ Florida State ----- The Seminoles moved into a host slot thanks to the Razorbacks taking out Oklahoma. FSU won its Regional with a staggering 37-6 win over Ohio State while Arkansas cruised through the Oklahoma Regional in three straight. The ‘Noles have to hope Arkansas doesn't get too excited about the "Florida" art of their name since the Hogs beat the Gators five times in a row.

Western Kentucky @ Virginia ----- Virginia @ Ole Miss

One of those matchups with be the eighth and final Super Regional. The Hilltoppers surprised Ole Miss last night, scoring six times in the eighth inning and once in the ninth to force another game. Ole Miss will try to bounce back tonight and give the SEC a third Super Regional host.

Schedules and game times for all next weekend's games won't be finalized until all the results are in, but it seems almost certain the Gators will play games on Friday and Saturday with a winner-take-all game Sunday if needed.
