Coaches poll makes it official - UF's No. 1

As anticipated, Florida will open the season as the clear No. 1 team in the coaches preseason poll. They weren't a unanimous choice, receiving 53 of a possible 59 first place votes. Texas is second with four first place votes, followed by Oklahoma and USC with one each. Alabama rounds out the top five.

The SEC placed four teams in the poll's top 10, with LSU at nine and Ole Miss at 10 joining the Gators and Crimson Tide. Georgia at 13 was the only other conference team voted to the preseason poll by the coaches.

LSU is Florida's highest ranked opponent to begin the year, and the schedule appears to provide mostly smooth sailing. Besides LSU and Georgia, FSU at 19 is the only other preseason ranked opponent on the Gators agenda right now. It would be a surprise if one of the three SEC West top 10 preseason teams was not Florida's opponent in Atlanta should they reach the conference championship game. Five other Florida opponents received votes but did not get enough to make the top 25, with one of those surprisingly being week two visitor Troy.

No Big East teams were selected for the preseason top 25, the first time that has happened to one of the BCS conferences. In contrast, four teams from non-BCS leagues made it with Boise State, TCU and Utah together as a group between 16-18.
