Ack's Insights

In this week's insights column, lets look at Florida's OL depth and who may be on the first team coming into the spring. Also, more football, basketball and recruiting notes.

Football Notes...  With the signing of several JUCO offensive lineman the Gators may actually be able to go two-deep this season and the spring will go along ways to determining the depth chart.  As of now, day one will go as follows, Max Starks, Shannon Snell, Mike Degory, Maurice Mitchell and Ryan Hand.  Ryan Griffin who will work some guard, will probably be the backup center.  Ryan Carter who red-shirted last season, will work some at the guard position.  Look for Anthony Guerrero to backup Mo Mitchell and possibly push him for playing time.  The other newcomer Tavares Washington will get a look at right tackle behind Randy Hand.  This should be a great battle.  The wild card is Jon Colon.  He must prove he is healthy and then may switch over to left tackle where Max Starks resides and Bobby Williams has had his career cut short by injury.  The second five today would look like, Colon, Lance Butler, Billy Griffin,Guerrero and Washington.  It still leaves Rod Dowdy, Carter and Dubose to give UF a much deeper and competitive offensive line.  Lance Butler can also move out to left tackle and Steven Bell is a walk on who will compete at the guard position.  Jonathan Marvin, who will be a redshirt sophmore, is a guard who really needs to turn the level up a notch in spring.

The running back position could be a fun battle that we will focus on in the coming weeks up to spring practice. Ran Carthon is the incumbent but expect Ciatrick Fason and DeShaun Wynn to compete for serious time.  Fason, who spent some time at fullback, will not play fullback in the spring.  Recent commit DJ Norris, is a defensive end who has the ability to come in and contribute at fullback if need be but the tailback position will be a fun unit to watch in spring practice.

Snippets and Tidbits... With Dee Webb committing this week, the Gators could land the best secondary class in the country and maybe in school history.  Antonio Cromartie loves the Gators and if Reynaldo Hill commits this week that is three bona fide players who will start very young.  UF is making a push for defensive lineman and look for Zook, in the last two weeks, to pick up at least 4 verbals.  Things have been pretty quiet on the Mo Mitchell front, the word  I get is that MO was an innocent bystander and did not have anything to do with vandalism or other charges.  He will be the starting right guard going into the spring and has been a good soldier so far off the field.  Florida's staff has experienced "negative recruiting" in the past with Steve Spurrier rumors to the NFL but this season has been at a new level.  Coach Zook and his staff have outworked everyone so much that the common theme with other schools is that Zooker will not be around very long so do not go to UF.  Of course this is nonsense and top players are still dropping.  In Mel Kiper Jr.'s recent NFL First Round Mock Draft he had 3 Gators going in the first round, Taylor Jacobs 12th to St.Louis, Rex Grossman 20th to the Denver Broncos, and surprisingly Clint Mitchell 32nd to the Oakland Raiders.

Basketball Notes... UF leads the SEC with 3 pointers made and is third in scoring margin. UF is making nine+ 3 pointers per game and is third in the league at 77.9 points per game.  The defense still concerns Coach Billy Donovan as teams are shooting 42% which is ninth best and getting too many open inside looks against the Zone.  One of the problems is location on the backside by forwards Matt Walsh and Matt Bonner, especially in Walsh's case he gets lost.  UF has trailed 3 of the 4 SEC games at the half and Donovan would like to get off to a better start Wednesday versus Vandy.  Drejer's minutes will start to go up in the next couple of games.  UF has an open Saturday before finishing the final 11 conference games with two per week.  Only Georgia is averaging more points per game in Conference play.  The 11 game winning streak is the second longest in school history.
