Meyer: Debose Decision Not Final

As the Florida Gators prepare for the opening game with Charleston Southern on Saturday, Urban Meyer has a team that seems ready to put on their best effort in defending their national championship. That effort will start without freshman phenom receiver Andre Debose who is sidelined with an injury that may require surgery. Meyer talked about that and the rest of his team with the media Tuesday.

The decision for whether Florida Gators freshman receiver Andre Debose should have surgery on his hamstring still has yet to be made.

Debose and coach Urban Meyer planned to meet with the team doctor Monday but will wait until they meet with a specialist to see what should be done.

"It's an unusual injury," Meyer said. "Coach [Mickey Marotti] told me they found [a specialist] somewhere who has more information. Once again, I'm not in the medical profession, but what doctors do is, if they have experience with it, there's no issue. If they don't have experience with it, they call around and talk to colleagues. He has one of those unusual ones, and our training staff has not dealt with this before."

A final decision is supposed to be made Tuesday night.

The highly-recruited playmaker was expected to play a large role filling the role of Percy Harvin in the offense this season.

Without him, the "Percy position" probably will be left to Brandon James, Chris Rainey and T.J. Lawrence.

Other Notes

Senior LB Dustin Doe will be suspended for the first game, and Meyer will decide the rest of the year on a week-to-week basis.

LB Brandon Hicks and DT Lawrence Marsh practiced Tuesday. LB Jelani Jenkins missed another practice with a sprained ankle.

Jonathan Phillips will be the starting kicker Saturday, but Meyer said Caleb Sturgis is on his heels.

Meyer said Tim Tebow looks like he is playing at full speed, but he never knows for sure. "Tim won't tell you. Usually, with a normal human being, you ask 'how is your shoulder feeling?' 'My shoulder hurts.' With Tim, it's 'how's your shoulder?' 'It's great, let's go play.'"

OG James Wilson has been making a strong push to win a starting spot. The starting offensive line should be decided tomorrow.

Even with what should be a lopsided game, Meyer wants his team to get something out of the game."The experience, the play of the game and execute at a high level is what we look for and win the game." He expects to see an offense similar to his, and a defense that will blitz a lot.

Every starter except Tebow and LB Brandon Spikes will be on one of the special teams. "That's kind of what we set the standard at around here. If you are not involved in the kicking game, the bright light shines on you pretty brightly in team meetings."
