Sammy Watkins Having a Big Year

The Florida Gators received a huge boost to the 2010 recruiting class when cornerback Jaylen Watkins decided he would become a Gator. Might the Gators be in line to land his brother? At 6-1 and 185-pounds, Ft. Meyers (FL) wide receiver Sammy Watkins is one of the best the state of Florida had to offer for the class of 2011.

"Our team is looking real good right now," Samuel Watkins said. "I am leading the team with 600 receiving yards and eight touchdowns."

As good as Watkins is on offense he is equally as impressive on the defensive side of the ball from his safety position.

"On defense I am doing great with 30 tackles and three interceptions. I missed two games with an injury that I am still dealing with. I have a hip flexor that I have been getting through. I am about 85% but I need to get used to playing through it."

Watkins talked about his older brother.

"He's been doing real good so far. They have had some close games but he is bringing them through."

On either side of the ball the younger Watkins is a true playmaker. It's on the offensive side of the ball where he is getting the most attention. He is big at 6-1 and 185-pounds, fast, physical and has no fear when the ball is in the air. At Friday Night Lights among some of the best wide receivers for the 2010 class he stood out. In person he seems much bigger than what he is listed and could easily end up north of 200-pounds. Watkins possesses a combination of vision, great hands and route running that will make him one of the most heavily recruited wide receivers in the southeast for the class of 2011.
