Scouting Sammy Watkins

The Florida Gators are primed to close with a bang in 2010 but that does not mean they don't have their sights set on players for the class of 2011. One of those players gets my vote for one of the top wide receivers in the state of Florida and the Southeast, Sammy Watkins.

Fort Myers (FL) South superstar Samuel Watkins will be one of the most heavily recruited players in the southeast for the class of 2011 regardless of position.

Watkins a 6-2 and 185-pound silky smooth wide out is the complete package. He is a rare combination of size and speed coupled with great instincts, vision and speed. He has great hands catching everything away from his body and shows great control and concentration once the ball is in the air. For a player of his size he has a great first step and the ability to cut on a dime once in the open field. Watkins, once in space has the speed (4.39) to run away from people but is physical enough to make the tough catch over the middle.

For any receiver extending your arms and catching the ball at its highest point is a necessity and something you don't expect to see from a high school junior but Watkins is a very polished wide receiver that will only get better as time goes on.

He has 724 yards receiving with eight touchdowns. If that wasn't enough he has five interceptions on defense proving his versatility on either side of the ball. Based on his ability to play either side at the next level and the tremendous upside that he has makes him one of the top two-way players in America and clearly one of the best wide receivers in the southeast for the class of 2011.

Early indications are the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes will battle it out for his services. At this time based on everything that I have heard from those close to and Watkins himself I would expect to see him in the Orange in Blue before it's all said and done.
