Gators Claim Fourth Straight SEC Title

The Florida Gator soccer team claimed its fourth straight SEC Title Friday night with a dominating 3-0 shutout of South Carolina. Redshirt freshman McKenzie Barney scored two goals and Holly King added another as Florida earned the tops seed in next week's SEC Tournament.

Barney scored both of her goals in the first half connecting with 25:57 to go in the opening period and adding another goal, her seventh of the season just 5:13 later. Both goals were assisted on by another Gator freshman Erica Tymrak.

The score stayed 2-0 for the final 20 minutes of the first half and another 43 minutes of the second half before Holly King, also a freshman headed in the clincher with 2:57 to play off a Lauren Hyde free kick.

Florida controlled the play throughout the contest and Gator goalkeeper Katie Fraine was only called upon to make two saves in registering her eighth shutout of the season.

With the win the Gators improve to 14-4-2, 8-1-2 in SEC action. They'll play at 6:00 EST on Wednesday in the first round of the SEC Soccer Tournament.

Win Caps Remarkable Rally

A month ago it seemed like Florida's run of SEC Titles would not continue this season. The Gators had just gotten back from a road trip to Ole Miss and Mississippi State and despite playing two second-tier SEC teams managed to come back with a loss and a tie. Florida was 2-1-1 and still had to face all of the contenders in the SEC like South Carolina, LSU and Georgia.

Well the Gators regrouped after that roadie and did not lose in their last seven SEC games posting six shutout wins and a 2-2 tie with Tennessee. As for the other contenders, Florida shut all three out, scoring eight goals in the process. In the final seven games of the regular season the Gators outscored their opponents 17-2.

It's the 10th SEC Title for Florida Coach Becky Burleigh in her 15 years at the helm of the Florida program. In some ways it may be one of the most satisfying since the Gators won despite losing a terrific senior class last year and saw senior Ashley Elliott go down to a season ending knee injury in the third game of the season.

The Gators have dominated the SEC All Sports competition in recent years and thanks to Gator Soccer, 2009-10 is off to a very good start.
