College Football Musings - Week 12

Conference races cleared up this past weekend including the settling the matchup in the ACC Title Game. An embattled coach (or two) takes another painful loss. Heisman hopefuls are emerging from every corner. Just some of the items we'll look at with this week's musings.

Georgia Tech/Clemson ---- The ACC Championship Game will send one of these teams on to the Orange Bowl. The folks in Miami will either get a highly ranked team in Georgia Tech or a boat load of Clemson fans. The only concern for this matchup is getting the two teams through rivalry games this weekend since Tech is hosting Georgia and Clemson visits South Carolina.

BCS Anxiety ---- The same level of anxiousness will be felt in the BCS since the top three teams in the country also face emotional rivals next week. It'll be interesting to see if Texas (Texas A&M), Alabama (Auburn) or Florida (FSU) manages to stumble in advance of their conference title games. There is added concern with regards to Texas since the Longhorns have to play Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship Game.

What weak schedule? ---- Florida has gotten more than its share of grief for its schedule this year but maybe at least some of that is inaccurate. Florida has played eight teams that are bowl eligible and will add two more in the games with Florida State and Alabama. Troy, which Florida beat 56-6 has clinched its fourth straight Sun Belt Conference Title.

Toby Gerhart for Heisman? ---- Stanford's senior running back is making his case for college football's top honor. Gerhart has run for 1,531 yards and 23 touchdowns this season including four scores in Saturday's loss to California. Gerhart has run for 100-plus yards nine times and scored in every game but one. One thing that could hurt Gerhart is Stanford's 7-4 record.

McCoy piling up stats ---- Gerhart will also have to overcome the perceived advantage enjoyed by Texas QB Colt McCoy who threw for 396 yards and four TD in a 51-20 win over Kansas. Still, the combined rushing and passing yards and TD numbers of McCoy (3,221, 24) and Tim Tebow (2,651, 25) are quite similar. McCoy has more total yards, but also has thrown nine interceptions to Tebow's four.

Not such a Weis guy ---- Notre Dame's beleaguered Charlie Weis couldn't get any relief as the fightless Irish lost to Connecticut in South Bend. It drops Weis to 16-20 since the start of the 2007 season and appears to have sealed his fate. Al Groh at Virginia is probably in the same sinking boat after falling to 3-8 on the year. Maryland would probably like to dump Ralph Friedgen, but the problem is Friedgen assistant James Franklin is the designated "coach in waiting". Franklin is Maryland's offensive coordinator and the team has been held to 13 points or less five times.

Seminoles survive ---- Florida State needed a score in the final minute to beat 2-9 Maryland and become bowl eligible. Things were a little different for young QB E.J. Manuel who threw three interceptions. Still, he passed for 206 yards and ran for 49 more. He will face a major challenge against the Gators next week.
